Besides Your Rights at Work....another good reason to Fill the ‘G’ on November 30!
The joint ACTU / VTHC National Day of Protest on Thursday 30th November is sure to be a big event. The word is out on the streets, in the supermarkets, the factories, the office blocks, in building sites, the schools, the hospitals – you name it – the Fill the ‘G’ is catching on.
Now the ACTU and VTHC have announced another good reason to attend.
The great Aussie performer Jimmy Barnes has agreed to appear live for the Sky Channel broadcast from the MCG!
John Howard and his IR Minister Kevin Andrews may be beating up the recent High Court ruling on the WorkChoices legislation, but it is important to see behind the usual misinformation and spin of the Federal Government.
The High Court did not pass judgement on the fairness and justice of the IR laws – it only approved the validity of using the Corporations power in making the law.
In addition, various High Court judges, in passing, commented on the WorkChoices laws giving too much regulatory power to the IR Minister which are not tested in Parliament. Such regulations have been used recently, for example, to interfere in the Victorian ETU collective bargaining negotiations.
The High Court result was no surprise and widely expected by the Labour movement. The Constitution’s Corporations Power has been expanded over many years by successive Federal governments. Its misuse by Howard is the issue, especially in terms of his draconian and extreme IR laws.
In essence we need to campaign, more than ever, over the next year to get rid of these laws.
