Eight Hour Day - Invitation to participate in Moomba parade

2006 marks the 150th anniversary of the Eight Hour Day in Victoria and as part of the anniversary celebrations the Eight Hour Day 150th Anniversary Project is delighted to announce their involvement in next year’s Moomba parade.

The Moomba parade is held on the Labour Day public holiday, on Monday 13th March 2006.

The Eight Hour Day 150th Anniversary Project is looking for volunteers to participate in the Moomba parade.

Participants must have stamina, enthusiasm and bring a sense of fun to the event.  Unlike taking part in marches, involvement in the Moomba parade requires basic performance, which will be directed by Melbourne Moomba Waterfest staff and rehearsed by participants before the event.

Volunteering to participate involves a commitment from you to attend a briefing session in the new year, 2 or 3 rehearsals leading up to the Labour Day long weekend, a 2 hour full rehearsal at RMIT on Saturday 11th March and assembly at 8am on Monday 13th March.  You will need to be available until 1.30pm on that day.

Please bear in mind when volunteering that the Moomba parade, in addition to being held on a long weekend, is during a school holiday period in Victoria and is a few days before the opening of the Commonwealth Games.

Bearing all that in mind please also consider that this is a unique opportunity to participate in a very special event.

Historically, Eight Hour Day processions were the largest public events in Melbourne until the mid-20th century.  On Eight Hours Day, workers would parade through the streets of Melbourne to celebrate the achievement of the Eight Hour Day pioneers.

The legacy of these pioneers is known internationally, with eight hours still recognised as the ideal standard working day.  The eight-hour movement promoted the value of family and community life, which is encapsulated in Melbourne by the annual Moomba procession.

If you are interested in participating in this event, please contact Leanne Shingles at Trades Hall on 9659 3583 or by email to lshingles@vthc.org.au
