Public transport workers avoid checking tickets for Nov 15 rally

Victorian Trades Hall Council has announced that public transport workers will assist those attending Tuesday’s national day of community protest in Melbourne by not checking tickets between 6am and 9am.

Over 100,000 people are expected to attend the national day of community protest, which begins in Federation Square at 9am. Workers and their families are being encouraged to utilise the opportunity and have their say about the new Federal Government’s industrial relations laws.

VTHC Secretary Brian Boyd said many thanks are directed towards the transport workers for their help and assistance in getting fellow workers to the important rally.

“We are encouraging people across Melbourne to take advantage of this and to jump on a train or tram, head into the city and make their voice count.

“These laws were not debated at the last federal election, Tuesday’s rally is a major opportunity to show the Government that Australian workers oppose the extreme new laws.

“This legislation will directly affect all workers in this state whether it be now or when it’s time to change jobs or re-negotiate current contracts,” Mr Boyd said.
