VTHC Condemns Howard’s Attack On Building Workers’ Family Picnics

The Victorian Trades Hall Council condemned Prime Minister John Howard’s public claim on radio that the annual building workers’ picnics on Monday 05 December would be the last ever held because of his new Industrial Relations Legislation changes.
Mr. Brian Boyd, Secretary of the Victorian Trades Hall Council and Secretary of the Victorian Building Industry Picnics Committee said, “John Howard bragging on radio this morning that today was the last of the building industry picnics was contemptible and anti-family.”
On Monday at Monee Valley Racecourse and other venues across Regional Victoria, at least 30,000 building workers, their families and friends were enjoying the annual picnics that have been a regular event for decades.
Mr. Boyd added, “Thousands of building workers’ children were enjoying jumping castles, dodgem car races, face painting, pony rides, ice-creams, cool drinks, running races etc, while Mr. Howard could only think of getting an extra day’s work for his big employer mates.”
When Mr. Boyd reported John Howard’s comments to the attendees at Moonee Valley Racecourse, thousands of workers and their families unanimously voted to be back at the same picnic, on the first Monday of December next year in defiance of Mr. Howard’s claims.
Mr. Boyd concluded, “The annual building workers’ picnics in Victoria are an institution that will not be surrendered by any of the building unions.”
