8 Hour Day Anniversary Project

Project Coordinator, Leanne Shingles; VTHC Secretary, Brian Boyd; Martin Kingham; Peter Marshall

Representatives of the Eight Hour Day 150th Anniversary Project presented the VTHC Executive Council on Friday 21 July 2006 with a series of mementos of the historic occassion to mark the finish of the project.
VTHC President and VTHC Secretary Brian Boyd formally accepted the memorabilia on behalf of the Executive Council.
Project Co-ordinator, Leanne Shingles, and head of the 8 Hour Day Committee, Martin Kingham, presented a range of items to the council including one of the banners that hung outside Trades Hall for much of the year.
The VTHC Executive commended Leanne Shingle for the excellent job done on promoting the importance of the 8 Hour Day in its 150th year at a time when the industrial landscape in this country is facing uncertainty as never before.
Highlights of the project included the reenactment of the original march in 1856 which won the 8 Hour Day and the Labour Day Dinner held at the Melbourne Museum.
To celebrate the 150th anniversary, Arts Victoria in partnership with Museum Victoria, State Library Victoria, Victorian Trades Hall Council, University of Melbourne, RMIT University, Melbourne Workers Theatre, Australian Centre for the Moving Image and City of Melbourne organised a series of arts, cultural and educational events throughout the year.
The Executive Council also re-afffirmed an earlier decision to hold all future annual VTHC Labour Day functions on the Friday evening closest to the 21st April, the date upon which the eight-hour day was actually won back in 1856.
In the past, for many years, the VTHC has conducted its Labour Day Dinner around the Labour Day/Moomba holiday in March.
