ACTU Adopts resolution on Colombia

On Wednesday 8 March 2006 the ACTU Executive adopted the following resolution on Colombia :


The ACTU Executive notes the report relating to the ACTU delegation to Colombia in 2005 and supports:

  • the delegation’s recommendations to encourage state Trades and Labour Councils in establishing the Australian Solidarity Network with Colombia;
  • ACTU and affiliate activities to further inform affiliates and members of the situation in Colombia as it relates to the plight of trade unionists and other social activists; 
  • the activities at the ILO to fully implement its program to highlight and bring to and end the exploitation and violence directed at workers and unionists in Colombia and ensure worker, employer and government cooperation to that end;
  • the participation of future delegations of trade unionists from Australia and encourages international union solidarity visits to Colombia, especially at the time of the June 2006 Congress; 
  • the coordination of Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA with delegation affiliates to investigate the feasibility of supporting a community development project in Colombia;
  • a call for Australian—based mining and resource companies, including BHP-Billiton, Xtrata, Anglo-American and Rio Tinto to respect and promote labour rights and human rights globally and especially in their operations in Colombia;
  • the Australian and international trade union movement’s support to the International Centre for Trade Union Rights (ICTUR) legal action unit project for Colombia.
