Ballarat University forced onto AWA's

New staff at Ballarat University will be forced to sign Australian Workplace Agreements or give up their position.
The National Tertiary Education Union warns it is a sign of things to come in the tertiary education sector as more people are forced onto AWA’s.
NTEU Victorian Division Secretary Matthew McGowan said that the AWA that new staff will have to sign strips away important employment conditions, and is the same as the AWA currently being offered to all existing staff.
“The AWAs will remove important conditions of employment.  No negotiation, no choice.  This is an Australian university saying ‘Take it or leave it’”.
The AWA’s remove various protections of the negotiated union enterprise bargaining agreement including protection from summary dismissal.
Only staff who sign AWA’s are given pay rises. About 150 of Ballarat University’s 1200 staff members have signed AWA’s.
