Cindy Sheehan Addresses VTHC

Prominent US anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan addressed a meeting of the Victorian Trades Hall Council Executive on Friday 26 May.

She praised the Australian union movement for its strong stand against the war in Iraq. She also highlighted the role unions played in supporting human rights through the struggle of working people. Ms Sheehan also spoke about the importance of grassroots networks the world over working together on shared objectives.
VTHC Secretary, Brian Boyd, welcomed Ms Sheehan and congratulated her on her work protesting the Iraq war and focussing attention on the plight of the Iraqi people. He said John Howard had led Australia into Iraq on false premises and needed to be held accountable.
Cindy Sheehan said that John Howard, George Bush and Tony Blair should probably spend some time in central Baghdad to expose them to the realities of the war they’ve inflicted upon the people of Iraq.
Cindy Sheehan has been an outspoken critic of the war in Iraq since her son, Casey, was killed while serving in the US military. She staged a five-week protest outside US President George W Bush’s Texas ranch and has become the central figure in the American peace movement.
Cindy Sheehan is in Melbourne to attend the Victorian Peace Network’s Unity for Peace National Conference on 27 –28 May. http://www.vicpeace.org/unityforpeace/
