Spotlight workers get 2¢ for lost conditions

New workers at Spotlight, one of Australia’s largest fabric stores, will miss lose penalty rates, rest breaks, overtime and public holiday in exchange for a miserly 2¢ per hour pay increase. The company is using the federal government’s new workplace laws to strip employers of their entitlements while offering barely minimal compensation.

New employees at any of Spotlight’s fabric stores will be offered Australian Workplace Agreements that give a miserly 2 cents per hour more than current workers as a trade off for their entitlements. Retail workers are already among the lowest paid in the Australian workforce. Unions estimate these workers will be at least $90 a week worse off than workers who are still covered by union negotiated Enterprise Bargaining Agreements. Workplace Relations Minister, Kevin Andrews, said the workers had a 'choice' and did not have to accept the jobs if they didn't want to.
