Victorian Human Rights Charter step in right direction

The VTHC endorses the Charter of Human Rights formally introduced into the State Parliament on Thursday 4 May 2006.
VTHC Secretary, Brian Boyd said, “The concept of a human rights charter arising from the old Westminster system, is an innovative and progressive step in a modern, developing country like Australia”.
Mr Boyd added, “However, civil and political rights are intimately linked to the social and economic rights of individuals in our rapidly changing society.
“Social and economic rights also have to be addressed, so that fundamentals of civil and political rights can have real meaning to ordinary people”.
Mr Boyd also said, “The initiative of the Attorney-General Rob Hulls is welcome, but the union movement and the wider community organisations will lobby hard over time for a review and an update of the Charter to make it more comprehensive”.
“In a period where an arch-conservative federal government is trampling all over peoples’ rights (particularly passing IR laws that reduce their wages, working conditions and standard of living), then a charter of human rights will help in the ongoing struggle against such bad laws”, concluded Mr Boyd.
