Western Suburbs Community and Union Solidarity Picnic

Hundreds of Workers and their families will join together to defend their human rights on Sunday, 2 April 2006 in the western suburbs.
Workers and their families and friends will join together this Sunday 2 April, 1.00 – 4.00PM to stand up for basic human rights and the rights of workers to a safe workplace and decent wages and conditions.
“It is these families and workers who will suffer the most from the Howard government’s workplace changes”, says, Victorian Trades Hall Secretary, Brian Boyd; “many workers in the less wealthy suburbs already work for low wages, little security and safety. These new laws will make their lives even harder and increasingly difficult. By introducing these laws the Howard Government is treating these workers and their families with the greatest disrespect.”
The Western Suburbs Community and Union Solidarity Coalition has organised a community solidarity picnic, with speakers including Sharan Burrow, Phillip Huggins (Anglican Bishop), Cath Smith (VCOSS), Kevin Bracken (MUA), Michele O’Neil and Janet Rice (Maribyrnong Mayor). Entertainment will be provided by Chris Wilson, The Band Who Knew Too Much, Crawfish Dave and many others. Corinne Grant will be the Compere.
“It is this kind of community solidarity that will ensure that the Howard Government will not return to Government at the next election”, says Mr Boyd, “and that will consequently lead to workers getting back their wages, conditions and safety at work. Many unions will be present to provide information about the workplace changes.”
Trades Hall stands in solidarity with all workers and their families and wishes the organisers great success for this big important event.
