Young workers say "You Gotta Fight for Your Right to Party"

Big Day Out goers will receive free information about their rights at work and the changes to workplace laws on Sunday 29th January 2006 Young Unionists Network Coordinator Clancy Dobbyn announced today.

Mr. Dobbyn said, ‘the Victorian Young Unionists Network (YUN) estimates that one in three young workers are unaware of their rights in the workplace.’

‘Young workers will be the most vulnerable group under the Howard Government’s WorkChoices legislation,’ he said.

YUN will be distributing 20,000 “You Gotta Fight for Your Right to Party” flyers to Big Day Out goers.

Mr Dobbyn said, ‘this campaign focuses on young people.’

‘Young workers need to made aware that the changes that the Howard Government have made may not see them lose their jobs tomorrow, but will affect them for the rest of their working lives.’

‘This ACTU endorsed campaign is geared to draw young people’s attention to the changes that are being made to workplace laws,’ he said.

The Victorian State Government said that it was also concerned about how the new legislation would affect young workers.

Acting Industrial Relations Minister John Lenders said that campaigns such as this were necessary to raise the awareness of young workers.

“This campaign is trying to hammer home the message that they deserve fair pay and conditions like everyone else.

Thanks to the Howard Government, from now on, young workers are going to be fighting an up hill battle,” Mr. Lenders said.
