Young workers took part in the Young Unionists Network (YUN) Union Summer Program held in February. YUN is a network of young workers which aims to inform and provide access to reliable information about young people’s rights at work and the role of unions in society
The YUN Union Summer Program involved 13 interns being placed with a variety of unions where they had the opportunity to learn from participating unions some of the roles and responsibilities and practical everyday realities of union workplaces and campaigns.
Participating unions were: NTEU, LHMU, CFMEU, ANF, CPSU, ASU (Private), ASU (Services & Authorities), VIEU.
The program ran for three weeks. There were two days of training (Mon&Tues) in the first week & training on the following two Mondays. The training involved speakers addressing a wide variety of topics including, the practicalities of OH&S laws, the role of a shop steward, the history of the Vic/Aust union movement, two organising sessions, the political economy, communication skills, the implications of WorkChoices and much more.
As part of the program the interns were to work together (in groups that did not have to correspond to the unions that they were placed with) to develop a project.
The project guidelines are geared to encourage the interns to address issues relating young people and the union movement. The interns are to present their projects to the next meeting of the Network: Tuesday 14th March. Unions that the projects are directed at will be invited to attend.
