ABCC documentary launched

The Australian Building Construction Commission (ABCC) has been targeting Australian workers since 2005 and has become a nasty tool of the Howard Government in its war on working people.

The ABCC has extraordinary powers to compel workers to testify against their union colleagues. Workers face fines of up to $30,000 for failing to testify before the secret hearings. It has excessive powers of coercion to intimidate witnesses and can threaten anyone appearing before it with six-months jail for talking about what happened and what was discussed with another person.

These powers rank amongst the worlds most repressive against working people and raise serious questions about this country’s free and democratic nature.

Constructing Fear is a forty-minute documentary which tells the story of those people who’ve been targeted by the ABCC and its guiding legislation, the Building Construction Industry Improvement Act.

It is a story of people being singled out, stripped of their rights and intimidated for being active members of the building unions. The dvd illustrates with personal stories that workers are fighting back.

Filmmaker Joe Loh has produced a powerful story of ordinary people struggling against the machinery of government in the fight for their rights. The documentary is being launched at Senate Section, Parliament House in Canberra and will be available for screening to groups all round the country.
