AIRC President briefs Trades Hall Council on changes to the commission

The President of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission, Justice Michael Giudice, visited Trades Hall on Wednesday 21 March 2007 to inform affiliates of changes to the operation of the commission under the new work laws.
In an informative presentation he offered guidance on what the so called “WorkChoices” laws mean for unions seeking to take action through the AIRC and highlighted some the difficulties they can expect to encounter through the process.
Some of the major changes are around the privacy provisions of the new act and the limitations this may place upon unions being parties to any action. Affiliates present were disturbed at some of the Kafkaesque provisions of the legislation which make the job of representing working people through the processes of the commission much more difficult than they have been in the past.
Assistant Secretary Nathan Niven chaired proceedings. It was agreed to seek further briefings as other changes may occur over time.
