Australia Post are trying to get rid of your posties

27 July 2007
Australia Post has decided to close the Fitzroy Delivery Centre. That's OK! It's too small and too noisy for a residential area.
Clifton Hill and North Fitzroy posties covering the 3068 post-code are going to deliver from the Preston Delivery Centre. That's OK too! The 10 posties, 2 night sorters and 2 parcel contractors involved are willing to relocate.
What's not ok is that instead of relocating 17 posties and other staff who look after the communities that live in the 3065, 3066 and 3067 postcode areas, Australia Post managers have told them:
  • They are no longer required
  • That their jobs are to be split
  • That they are to be replace by cheap labour.

Wages to be cut 15%

Management are trying to employ new starters on  four-hour per day jobs that will be paid 15% less pay and not even have a tea-break.

Your mail will be delayed

And what about the quality of the service?

By getting rid of the traditional posties who have all worked for Australia Post for years (between 3 and 27 years) and because of the splitting of the sorting and delivery functions, we believe the believe the quality of the mail service will be badly affected. The mail will also be delayed and delivered later in the day much of the time.
