Vacancy - VTHC Women's Officer Position

3 Days per week

Remuneration as per the VTHC Staff EBA 

Overall Aims and Objectives

  1. To initiate and coordinate union responses and campaigns around issues and concerns of all working women.
  2. To provide practical, strategic and policy advice and training for unions on issues of concern to all working women.
  3. To link the major campaigns of the VTHC to the needs and specific interests of all women.
  4. To build co-operative strategies with affiliates developing networks to build on women’s issues
  5. To act as a mentor/facilitator for unions to increase female membership and their activism.
  6. To advocate for all working women in broader political and community forums

Duties of the Position

  1. Advocate, lobby and facilitate VTHC priorities to ensure tangible outcomes which will be of benefit to all women workers and unions.

  2. Assist unions to develop strategies relevant to all women workers including strategies such as recruitment and training to develop an active women membership.
  3. Examine VTHC policy/campaigns/practice to ensure they are inclusive of all women workers.
  4. Provide unions with practical guides, programs and training to increase women workers participation and activism in trade unions
  5. Link existing union’s women's committees and work closely with those committees on issues relevant to union’s individual needs, priorities and strategies.
  6. Plan, organise, and implement the work of the VTHC women’s committee in consultation with the President and Secretary.
  7. Act as a resource, mentor and conduit for unions without a Women’s Officer
  8. Conduct workshops to assist unions with recruitment and other activities/issues relevant to individual unions including the Anna Stewart program. 
  9. Any further activities, duties and responsibilities as determined by the VTHC Secretary and Executive council from time to time.

Accountability

 

The position will report to Secretary and Assistant Secretary of the VTHC on a day to day basis and the Executive Council in respect to major decisions.

 

Necessary Skills and Experience

 

The applicant must have and/or demonstrate the following skills and experience: 
  • A strong and demonstrated commitment to trade unionism
  • An understanding of, and experience in, issues and campaigns affecting women workers
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of working with women from a broad range of backgrounds and occupations in unions and the community
  • A capacity to initiate, manage, implement and evaluate projects
  • Ability to work in a cooperative and consultative manner
  • An ability to work with the broad range of unions that constitute the VTHC
  •  Computer literacy and sound organisational skills are essential
