VTHC Supports decent EBA for Victoria Police

Friday 13 July 2007

The VTHC Secretary, Brian Boyd attended a Victoria Police Association mass meeting of over 8000 Victoria Police Officers at the Vodafone Arena today.

VTHC Secretary Brian Boyd, UFU Secretary Peter Marshall, ETU Secretary Dean Mighell join Victorian Police Association Secretary Paul Mullett at the end of the Police Officers Mass Meeting in Melbourne on Friday 13 July 2007

In an address to the meeting, Mr Boyd said the VTHC was more than happy to support key Victorian public service workers who are seeking a fair and just enterprise agreement, especially in the current climate.

He also pointed out the Victorian Government regularly took credit for major public sector achievements e.g. the capture of Mokbel, the ending of the underworld war, the work of the police and other emergency services during the recent floods in Gippsland, but give no real recognition for the people who deliver them.

The VTHC Secretary said it shouldn’t matter if you are a copper in Broome, Darwin, Cape York, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, in the aboriginal camps of central Australia, Melbourne or in Mallacoota, they should get wage parity for the excellent work they do.

Mr Boyd said Public Service workers should not be taken for granted. Private Sector workers are winning with collective bargaining, far more than 3.25%. Private Sector workers do not begrudge their Public Sector counter parts, a fair deal.

All workers deserve a decent standard of living. John Howard and Peter Costello are telling us ad nauseum in this election year the economy is booming, that everything is going well.

The Victorian Bracks ALP government correctly say that the Federal government’s IR policies are wrong and discriminatory. If ever it makes sense it is now, by definition, that Victorian Public Service workers, be they police or anyone else deserve wages justice.

Brian Boyd concluded this address to the mass meeting of Victoria Police by calling on the State Government to come to the bargaining table in good faith and negotiate a fair outcome for all Victorian Police Officers.
