Campaign Against ABCC Continues......

2nd December 2008

By Brian Boyd, VTHC Secretary

Today nearly 5000 protesters rallied outside the ABCC headquarters at 553 St Kilda Rd to celebrate the recent dropping of charges against Noel Washington.   He received a tremendous welcome from the mainly trade union crowd.

The Geelong Trades Hall choir opened up proceedings.

The
Speakers included:
Jeff Lawrence Secretary ACTU, Brian Boyd Secretary VTHC, Dave Noonan National Secretary CFMEU Construction, Marcus Clayton Defence Lawyer, Dean Mighell Vic Secretary CEPU-ETU, Garry Robb Secretary Metals Division AMWU, Kevin Bracken MUA Vic Secretary, Father Bob McGuire, Ann Taylor Vice President AEU, Michele O’Neil Secretary TCFUA, Martin Kingham Assistant Secretary National CFMEU and Noel Washington CFMEU.

All speakers highlighted, while there had been a back down in the specific case against Noel Washington, the ABCC and the underpinning legislation was still in place under the current government.

A number of speakers also called on anyone caught up in the ABCC's legal net to follow Noel Washington's lead and defy this anti-worker organisation.
