Indian Union Official at Trades Hall

Comrade Nambiath Vasudevan, the Secretary of the All India Blue Star Employees Federation and co-ordinator of the New Trade Union Initiative (NTUI) in India visited the Victorian Trades Hall Council today and met with VTHC Secretary, Brian Boyd.

The NTUI is a multi sector federation that is developing important activities to strengthen the rights of workers in India, in the Asia Pacific region and globally.  NTUI works with many unions and federations across India, which is a very significant development in that country.

Comrade Vasudevan said, like Australia, trade union rights are under threat.  Laws restricting collective bargaining and the right to strike are being pushed across India.  Around 10% of manufacturing workers are now in a union, with the ability to recruit new members becoming more and more difficult under new laws.

Comrade Vasudevan told Brian Boyd part of the wider union movement’s strategy in India is to seek international solidarity links.
