OFFICIAL STATEMENT BY VICTORIAN TRADES HALL COUNCIL

13 June 2008

The Victorian Trades Hall Council in Melbourne, Australia mourns the untimely death of the Labour Leader and “Grand Old Man of Philippine Labour”, Crispin Beltran.

Some of our Officials and Members, including myself, have fond memories of their contact with “Ka Bel” over many years, both on solidarity visits to the Philippines and on his solidarity visits to Australia.

“Ka Bel” was an inspiration to the world’s working class, through his commitment, sacrifice, courage, leadership and vision and through his commitment to a better world.

As a KMU union leader, community worker, legislator and fighter “Ka Bel” showed us by example.  As his wife has said upon his death “the fight goes on”.  This is how “Ka Bel” would see it and we will continue his work through our struggles in Australia and our international solidarity work.

We express our condolences to his family, friends and comrades.

Long live the solidarity of the Filipino and Australian working people.
