VTHC meets Cypriot MP – Secretary briefs him on conservative history of Alexander Downer

21 July 2008

The VTHC Secretary Brian Boyd met Cypriot Member of Parliament, Mr Andros Kyprianou at the Melbourne Trades Hall.

The meeting occurred on the eve of former Liberal Party Federal MP Alexander Downer arriving in Cyprus at the start of his UN Special Envoy Mission.

The VTHC Secretary heard about the current situation in Cyprus.  He then briefed Mr Kyprianou on the conservative history of Mr Downer.  In particular, the VTHC Secretary expressed grave doubts about how Mr Downer could help Cyprus after all the damage he has done in Australia and abroad as one of Australia’s most arch-conservative politicians.

He emphasised that Mr Downer would not be objective and was well known as an ‘echo chamber’ for U.S. war policy in Iraq.  The VTHC Secretary said Downer’s recent public comment linking Australia’s role in Iraq, with things being ’untidy’ in Cyprus, illustrating his lack of sophistication and understanding.

Mr Boyd told the visiting Cypriot MP that Mr Downer was a classic anti-worker, anti-union warrior with no social awareness skills and was still facing investigation for the infamous UN “Oil for food”/ AWB scandal.

The VTHC has hosted a visit by a joint trade union delegation of Greek and Turkish Cypriots in 2004 and is looking forward to ongoing development with Cypriot trade.
