Occupational Health and Safety

Occupational health and safety is consistently ranked by workers as one of the most important issues of concern for them at work.

The VTHC has an Occupational Health and Safety Unit which has a number of functions and responsibilities:

  1. Support, advice and assistance to affiliates and union members.

The Unit has its own OHS Reps website sponsored by WorkSafe Victoria, which provides information on OHS legislation, hazards, and much more. For example, if you are looking for a reputable asbestos removalist or an OHS consultant, you can get this information from the website. If you can't find the information you want, you can send in a query. It will be answered by VTHC OHS Unit staff, usually within a couple of days.

From the OHS website, you can also subscribe to our free fornightly e-journal SafetyNet - it's full of OHS news - research, local and international news, and more.

  2. Occupational Health and Safety Training: The VTHC Health and Safety Training Centre is a non-profit, self-funding centre managed by the Trades Hall Council. Training and training support services are available to unions, elected health and safety representatives, workers, and community groups. We also have course suitable for OHS Committees, managers and supervisors.

More information on the VTHC's training program.

  3. Co-ordination of campaigns on health and safety issues.
  4. Development and promotion of health and safety information and policies.
  5. Active involvement with WorkSafe Victoria and the Victorian government to ensure the delivery of improvements in OHS standards, policies and programs.
  6. Participation in the development, implementation and dissemination of ACTU National OHS Priorities.
