Women and Work
Women have been actively involved in union politics since the early part of the last century. The struggle for better wages and conditions continues on a number of fronts. The push for paid maternity leave is hotting up with the Federal Government considering a number of options. The International Labour Organisation recommends 14 weeks paid maternity leave. The Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission has produced a report on maternity leave and a final report is due later this year. See the
ACTU website for updates. The Trades Hall womens committee is also planning a campaign on violence against women in the workplace. Our OHS e-journal
SafetyNet has updates on this campaign.
